Recommendation Roundup
A list of recommendations on everything from Martha Stewart to Jessica Fletcher
Welcome to Recommendation Roundup! As I scoot around the internet, I keep a running list of podcasts, tv shows and articles that I like, and think you might like, too. Then I share them here.
Hello from a short week where I didn’t have time to write and send this in a timely manner. Do you remember that meme of the woman pointing and crying with text that said, “The beach gonna get whatever body I give it!”? I am bringing that vibe to this newsletter. Your inbox is gonna get the newsletter I give it lol.
This has been a hell month. I hope you are resting, eating your favorite foods and watching at least five different cozy fall vibes playlists on YouTube. Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks for being here and sticking with me during an inconsistent posting month.
Me!
For the Nashville Scene’s annual “Hey, Thanks” issue I wrote a note of thanks to Parnassus Books for their video series "The Laydown Diaries," which allows me to learn about new releases from the comfort of my phone.
Kaveh Akbar will be in Nashville for the paperback tour of Martyr! and I’m going to be his conversation partner. The event is at Parnassus on Jan. 8. Info and (free) registration here.
The Porch is hosting me for their Office Hours series. I’m basically going to camp out for an hour and answer all of your burning questions about social media, newsletters and why everyone is so mean in comment sections. It’s on Jan. 25 and you can register ($15) here.
Not me!
I feel like everyone with a newsletter is sharing the same links right now, but whatever. This op-ed in the NYT from Tressie McMillan Cottom is worth re-sharing for anyone who hasn’t read it yet. (gift link)
I also got a lot out of this Rebecca Solnit piece in The Guardian where she writes this about the election: “Our mistake was to think we could row this boat across the acid lake before the acid dissolved it.”
In her newsletter Frump Feelings, Emma Copley Eisenberg shares a great link roundup divided into three parts: creative work links, body liberation links and democracy and community care links. Low-key a masterclass on how to share links. Thank you, Emma.
I feel like I have lived three lives since I typed “Martha Steward doc on Netflix” into my list of things to share this month. I moved to NYC in the height of Martha Stewart’s ascension. This was still the era of magazine jobs and landing a gig at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia was THE job to get. I could never get hired there, but I remember a handful full of folks who did and went on to become bloggers/authors/creators. Anyway, watch the doc if you haven’t already. It’s fascinating and a walk down memory lane for anyone who lived in NYC in the early aughts.
On her podcast Burnt Toast, Virginia Sole-Smith talks to Mara Goodman, MD about fatphobia in health care. Mara is a family doctor in New Jersey working to bring more doctors on board with a weight-neutral approach. As someone who’s had two traumatic experiences at the doctor’s office, this was healing to listen to.
I loved this piece in The New Yorker on Quincy Jones from Hanif Abdurraqib.
When I lost my mind during the pandemic I started watching Murder She Wrote while playing solitaire on my iPad. This installment of Landline about the fashion of the show is A++.
Thanks so much for the shout out and thanks for listening! ❤️ Wishing you a restful holiday weekend.
